Chess News from St Catherine’s

The chess club started up again this September and currently over half the school is involved every Friday playing in the chess club. Congratulations to Shaam, Oscar, Prev, Conor, Max, Sol, Meadhbh, Eva (1st Class) and Yuri and Keeva (new pupils) who learned to play in record time and are now battling it out in Division 2 with last year’s veterans from 2nd Class. Also congratulations to Killian Honer and Aoife Kelly, who have been promoted to Division 1B and to Jamie Keery who has made it to the dizzy heights of Division 1A!
12 children are coming each week after school to chess coaching hoping to make it onto the team. Best of luck to Shane, Meliza, Cheryll, Edi, Ross, Edi, Roxana, Cian, Luke, Robert, Keelin and Milo in their endeavours. On October 18th, some members of the coaching group travelled to Galway with Ms Cronin, along with Oliver Hughes and Michael Whelan, stars of last year’s team. Oliver, Shane and Cheryll all came home with trophies. A larger group is traveling to Cork on Saturday, November 15th – best of luck everyone.

Recent news: On Saturday November 15th, Ms Cronin took an intrepid band of travellers to Cork for a chess tournament. Well done to Roxana, Edi, Shane, Cheryll, Cian, Meliza and Ross, and also Oliver and Michael from last year’s 6th. We won 7 individual trophies and four medals for being the best primary school there.
